The scope and mounts are a very important part of the whole rifle. Caution is advised when creating opinions about these two items. The reason is they are both “big dollar” after market items, volume wise. Un-true glittery ads are often used to get your money. For the unknowing buyer, many are quite convincing. It is not our job to badmouth anyone but rather to share with you what we use.
Mounts
The mounting system is the quickest to tell you about, we use Talley rings and bases on our rifles because we find them to be the best that we have ever used. They are precision machined on CNC equipment. Each set is perfectly round and fits the scope and the bases perfectly. Our mounting problems went away when we started using Talley rings and bases.
Scopes
The best scope for the money is the Leupold, no one else even comes close. In our opinion, the best scope on the market is the Swarovski. Between these two companies, 96% of our rifles come with one or the other. Leupold and Swarovski both have some
products that fit certain applications best. Between the two, you are covered. Both companies have continued to add to their line of scopes until they now have scopes available for all needs and applications. Another great scope is the Kahles, as well as Schmidt and Bender. There are a lot of scopes that are fairly new and we haven’t seen enough of them to form a good opinion. A large majority of our clients go on one or more expensive hunts every year and they want equipment that works! The gimmicky equipment never stays popular long enough to be evaluated, so we don’t use it. We can’t count the times that we’ve seen scopes and mounts be the culprit of accuracy
problems with a rifle. Something we can have added to a Leupold scope is a trajectory dot reticle. After we do the ballistics work up, we can furnish the information to the custom reticle company. They install dots in the reticle subtended for the distances you wish to shoot. EXAMPLE: You range a sheep at 500 yards with your range finder. You put the 500 yard dot dead center of his shoulder and shoot. Of course you would have to allow for cross-wind if it were a factor. A bus load of our customers are deadly accurate with this set up. It’s the easiest way to be a long range shooter. Included in this before anything else is a “Super Accurate” rifle. Trust someone who knows, or do your own research before you buy a scope.
Recievers
To live up to our self-imposed accuracy and dependability standards we must have control of the parts that we use to make our rifles. We realized this in the mid-eighties and began a long effort to make in house what we needed to make a super rifle that we were willing to put our name on every time. The first receiver that carried the Jarrett name was manufactured by Nesika. It is a very good quality two lug stainless receiver. We continue to use them on certain applications. In January of 2000 we began
engineering a receiver we planned to make in house. After many years of stripping all kinds of receivers, and trying to make them mechanically perfect for our rifles, we knew what we wanted. To admit a little vanity here I knew if I made a receiver it would have to be very special. If it wasn’t, we’d get booed off the stage! Our whole purpose was something better, more user friendly. With the help of a very talented young man by the name of Mike Irwin, we spent about a year and a half perfecting our action. From this effort came the Jarrett Tri-Lock receiver. Then the big question again. Why should I want a Tri-Lock receiver on my rifle? First, it’s a receiver with nothing but positive features that’s flawlessly dependable. The action has three lugs rather than two so we have 50% more sectional area. The cartridges are unilaterally supported at three points rather than two. Rigid lock up. The action has no stamping, broaching, or welding anywhere on it. This eliminates metal distortion and stresses. The Tri-Lock is made of the toughest space age steel. The bolt throw is a lightning fast 60-degrees. This provides greater clearance between the bolt and the scope, a great asset to guys with big hands! The action has a rear guide bushing which seals the action while firing. The bolt lugs interlock with the rails for the true-in-line precise feeding. The Jarrett Tri-Lock has interchangeable feed rails (the only one in the industry) to interface the in-line feeding system. Semi-integral recoil lug for switch barrel capabilities. We could go on and on, but the point is the Jarrett Tri-Lock is truly a “better mousetrap”. The Tri-Lock is presently long action standard bolt face or magnum. We are currently working on another action that we can offer in right and left hand, short and long configurations. It will be somewhat different from the Tri-Lock in design, but will retain the expected Jarrett quality.
